History

1972 Mushroom Music Publishing is founded by Michael Gudinski; widely recognised as one of the most important figures in the history of the Australian music industry. Michael enters the music business with the creation of Mushroom Records, the largest independent record label in Australia, and Mushroom Music Publishing, which continues to be the leading independent publishing company in Australia and New Zealand.
1973 One of the earliest songs recorded for Mushroom Records, Matt Taylor’s “I Remember When I Was Young” becomes a hit
1974 Skyhooks achieve a #1 album with Living In the 70s
1979 The illustrious Frontier Touring Company is founded by Michael Gudinski
1979 Platinum and Gold deck the halls, with success from Mushroom Records artists The Sports, Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, Christie Allen and Split Enz
1980 Mushroom moves into its current home at 9 Dundas Lane
1981 The Swingers “Counting The Beat” becomes a #1 hit in both Australia and New Zealand
1984 Hunters & Collectors release “Throw Your Arms Around Me”
1985 Mushroom Music Publishing becomes the exclusive music supplier to legendary Australian TV Drama, Neighbours. This relationship continues today.
1985 The Models release “Out of Mind, Out of Sight” and “Barbados”
1986 Hunters & Collectors release Human Frailty and Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls’ release Gossip
1987 Mushroom begins publishing the legendary New Zealand Flying Nun catalogue (The Chills, The Clean, Chris Knox)
1988 Mushroom Music Publishing picks up its second exclusive supply deal with Home and Away. Today, the show continues to air nightly and is syndicated to more than 70 territories (and many more countries) across the globe.
1989 Choirboys “Run To Paradise” breaks into the Billboard Hot 100
1991 Mushroom Music Publishing signs Kylie Minogue
1991 Yothu Yindi receive a APRA ‘Song of the Year’ for "Treaty"
1992 Skyhooks are inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame
1993 Crowded House receive a APRA ‘Song of the Year’ for "Four Seasons In One Day"
1993 A reciprocal relationship with Chrysalis Music UK begins (Portishead, Wet Wet Wet, The Lightning Seeds, Babybird)
1993 Weddings Parties Anything receive an ARIA ‘Song of the Year’ for “Father’s Day"
1994 Crowded House receive a APRA ‘Song of the Year’ for "Distant Sun"
1994 The first Writers’ Bloc songwriting workshop is hosted at Mount Macedon, including writers such as Ross Wilson, Chris Bailey and James Blundell
1995 Kylie Minogue and Nick Cave rock the charts with “Where The Wild Roses Grow”
1996 "Cry", to be performed by The Mavis's, is conceived at our Writers’ Bloc between Barry Palmer (Deadstar) and Matt Thomas (The Mavis's)
1998 Leonardo’s Bride “Even When I’m Sleeping” achieves APRA song of the Year
1998 Mushroom begins its sub-publishing deal with Ivy League Music publishing. Today Ivy League boasts The Vines, Josh Pyke, Cloud Control, Lanie Lane and Youth Group.
1998 Mushroom 25 Concert held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Mushroom including performances by Kylie Minogue and INXS
2001 Liberation is reborn as Michael Gudinski & Warren Costello’s new record label. Today Liberation is the home of The Temper Trap, Hunters & Collectors, Liam Finn, Vance Joy, Adalita, Troy Cassar-Daly, Snakadaktal and more
2001 Something For Kate’s Echolalia certified Platinum
2002 The Illusive label (Bliss N Eso) comes to life and Matt Gudinski enters the building. The next generation of the Mushroom Group have arrived
2002 The Vines “Get Free” peaks on the Billboard Charts at #7, taking out NME’s ‘Song of the Year’ and Breakthrough Artist at the ARIA Awards
2004 Melbourne artist Luke Rogers was chosen by Mushroom Music Publishing to produce a unique sculpture based on the classic Mushroom logo from the early 70's. The sculpture forms the Mushroom Music Award. These awards have since been given to iconic artists such as Nick Cave, Eskimo Joe, Finn Brothers, Jack Johnson, Kylie Minogue, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Saints and The White Stripes
2005 The New Zealand office opens in Auckland
2006 Michael Gudinski, AM, is awarded a Member of The Order of Australia in recognition of his significant contribution to the Australian music industry
2006 Liberator is born and becomes the licensing (records) arm of the new era of Mushroom for international artists. Today the label boasts Dizzee Rascal, Alt J, Kaiser Chiefs and many more, sharing dual rights with Mushroom Music Publishing
2006 Festival Music Publishing catalogue acquisition (Powderfinger, George, Tim Rogers, Richard Clapton)
2007 Eskimo Joe’s Black Fingernails, Red Wine goes 4x Platinum
2007 The Sydney based record label Ivy League joins the group, bringing chart topping Youth Group. Today Ivy League boasts The Rubens, Cloud Control and Alpine
2009 Mushroom quietly sets a trap for what will be one of our biggest ever bands both in Australia and the world: The Temper Trap.
2009 Mushroom Music Publishing in partnership with Sasha Music Publishing develops the Mushroom Music Song Book; a tribute to the history of Mushroom Music Publishing featuring fifty truly amazing compositions from The Triffids, The Saints, Paul Kelly, Split Enz, Nick Cave, Hunters & Collectors, Yothu Yindi, Sunnyboys, The Temper Trap, Magic Dirt, You Am I, The Models and many, many more
2009 Mushroom begins a reciprocal relationship with BMG Rights Management (La Roux, Matt Corby). Today the amalgamated and ever-growing BMG Chrysalis catalogue includes Blondie, Will.i.am, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Cee Lo Green, Bryan Ferry and David Bowie to name a few
2010 Celebrating Twenty-five years since the establishment of Mushroom’s relationship with Australian drama, Neighbours. The relationship is honoured with the presentation of a Mushroom Music Publishing award
2010 The Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition” takes out the APRA ‘Song of the Year’
2010 The Models and The Loved Ones inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame
2011 Jed Kurzel (The Mess Hall) takes out APRA Screen Composer award for feature film Snowtown
2011 Hard rock is well and truly back. I OH YOU label (DZ Deathrays, Violent Soho) smashes its way into the group and UNFD (Illy, Vance Joy, Dream on Dreamer) signs a sub-publishing deal with Mushroom
2011 Kylie Minogue inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame
2011 Adalita’s Self Titled album wins Best Album at the Australian Independent Record Labels Awards
2011 The Jezabels’ Dark Storm EP and debut album Prisoner both go Gold
2012 Mushroom Music Publishing hosts its tenth Writers’ Bloc at the Abbotsford Convent in Melbourne. Since its inception, the New Zealand Writers’ Bloc and the Country Writers’ Bloc have also become established events in the Mushroom Publishing calendar
2012 Yothu Yindi inducted to the ARIA Hall of Fame
2012 Together with UNFD, Liberation and a song called “Riptide”, we welcome Vance Joy to the Mushroom Group
2013 The Mushroom Group of Companies celebrates its 40th birthday, kicking off the year with a massive party to celebrate. Matt Gudinski is promoted to senior executive and together, Michael & Matt Gudinski announce the rebranding of Mushroom Group
2013 The inaugural Mushroom Music Publishing Recording Grant is handed to Fraser A Gorman, with $10,000 contributed towards the making of his new record

2014 Mushroom Music Publishing Managing Director Ian James appointed Adjunct Professor in Victoria University’s College of Business.
2014 Chet Faker makes it to #1 with his debut album "Built On Glass"
2014 Vance Joy wins "Song Of the Year" and "Pop Work Of The Year" for "Riptide" at the APRA Awards. Birds of Tokyo win "Rock Work Of The Year" and "Most Played Australian Work" with "Lanterns". "Urban Work Of The Year" went to Bliss N Eso for "Act Your Age". For the first time in the awards history one publisher (Mushroom Music Publishing) represented every song for "Song Of The Year".
2014 The inaugural Mushroom Music Publishing Recording Grant is handed to D.D Dumbo AKA Oliver Perry with $10,000 contributed towards the making of his new record
2014 Chet Faker wins Best Male & Best Independent Release at the 2014 ARIA Awards. Sheppard win Best Group. ARIA Song of the Year awarded to 5 Seconds of Summer for "She Looks So Perfect".
Best Country Album went to Kasey Chambers for "Bittersweet". DZ Deathrays awarded Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album for "Black Rat" and Dan Sultan for Best Rock Album with "Blackbird".
