Brightness is Alex Knight, a 28-year-old singer-songwriter based in Newcastle, Australia. After living in the UK for 6 years, Alex moved back and finally gave a name to the scattering of songs he’d been writing in between playing drums for other bands.
Following on from debut single ‘Oblivion’ which had a video premiere via The Fader in February, it is with the greatest pleasure that we present ‘Talk To Me’, taken from his debut record Teething which will be released on Friday 30 June 2017 via I OH YOU.
‘Talk To Me’ brings a sense of calm, allowing the listener to embrace the awkward but beautiful stumbling that life brings. “…rawness and inexperience aren’t things to be ashamed of, especially for young people… it can be hazardous to affect composure and poise when in fact you’re lost. It carries a similar sentiment to ‘Everybody Hurts’ by R.E.M, but in this case its more ‘Everybody’s Green’” explains Knight.
Knight has a disarmingly lovely way of bringing raw emotion and honesty to his work. The most unassuming moments bringing sparks of life to the audio bed and overall feeling of the track. “The vocals were recorded late at night in my friend’s bedroom, which was in a share-house, so I was singing particularly softly. He had mentioned that his flat mate owned a cornet, so the next morning I grabbed it and recorded the horn part for the outro.”
The song was originally built around a drum-loop, which took inspiration from part of a KD Lang song. Knight often referred back to her work in the final stages of recording ‘Talk To Me’ Рtrying to capture the same relaxing atmosphere that she evokes, which shines through in the raw yet soft complexion of the song.
‘Talk To Me’ is a hint in to what listeners can expect from Teething. An unusually intimate body of music, that is comforting in its exposed state. Like talking to an old friend and knowing you are safe and understood within that space.
