Robert Upward is a professional screen composer, songwriter and producer. Robert also owns and operates UPWARD studios, a boutique studio located in South Melbourne. Robert is a truly contemporary composer for the screen, with the technical competence to match his creative ability. Robert’s enduring success and respected role within the Australian music, film and TV industry are reflected by his stints as a judge for both the AACTA Awards and Tropscore.Robert composed the original score for the high profile SBS documentary series Immigration Nation, which was nominated for an AACTA/AFI Award for Best Documentary Series in 2012. Robert’s original score is emotive and evocative, perfectly suited to this haunting investigation into the history of immigration in Australia.
Robert was a finalist in the prestigious 2004 APRA Screen Music Awards, for his work on the documentary Docklands (7, Australia) with Igloo Design. Additional TV credits have included the series’ Out & About (Foxtel UK, MTV U.S.), and Cactus Garden (10 Australia, UK/US).
Robert composed the score for the 2013 ABC2 documentary Our Little Secret, part of the prestigious Opening Shot series. He also wrote the haunting score for Fatal Honeymoon, a feature film directed by Nadia Tass and set for release in both the US and Australia. The compelling film (due for Australian feature release in 2014) stars Harvey Keitel and tells the true story of a US couple whose honeymoon on the Great Barrier Reef takes a dark turn. Robert also wrote the original score for the feature film Centre Place, a warm romantic drama starring Sullivan Stapleton and John Waters. Centre Place was released in the US, Europe and Australia (2012). In addition to his career in film and television, Robert is also known for his work as a singer/songwriter. His first solo album “Four Walls” led to a recording deal in the US.
Robert’s work with the dance pop act emaar has had numerous commercial releases and extensive radio airplay. The emaar track “Stay”, which Robert both composed and produced, was a finalist in the Dance/Electronica category of the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards in the US. emaar track “Higher” reached number 9 in the Nova charts (National, Australia). Many of Robert’s songs have been synched to film and television, including several songs which have featured heavily on the popular long running Australian TV series Home and Away, most significantly as a feature performance in the 2013 series finale “music festival” storyline. Robert has also enjoyed a long career writing and producing for other artists across a range of musical genres.
