Stephen Mowat

Stephen Mowat is an accomplished, award-winning and in-demand producer from Melbourne, Australia.
Driven by a desire for a career immersed in music even if he wasn’t the one performing, Stephen put down the trumpet he’d been playing in the high school concert band and began DJing and making beats in Year 10, and went on to study audio engineering and production after graduating high school.
Under the alias Matik, Mowat solely produced Pez’s ARIA-nominated album A Mind Of My Own, including the single Festival Song, which scored number 7 in Triple J’s Hottest 100 of 2008. He also produced for Drapht’s ARIA-winning album The Life Of Riley, Bliss n Eso’s platinum-selling and ARIA-nominated albums Running On Air and Circus In The Sky, and Seth Sentry’s This Was Tomorrow.
In 2013, Mowat spent six months in New York writing and recording with Brooklyn-based band Walking Shapes, earning himself an associate producer credit on their debut album Taka Come On alongside Gus Oberg (The Strokes, Albert Hammond Jr, Har Mar Superstar). Back in Australia, he produced and mixed Ali Barter’s EP Trip, and Leon Thomas’s EP The Story of Leon Thomas.
Alongside his production and co-writing work he also writes, produces and plays guitar in Cash For Gold, a collaboration with vocalist Jack Weaving (ex-Dukes of Windsor).
