Writers’ Bloc 2012 | ABBOTSFORD CONVENT

We’re currently basking in the 25 stunning tracks that were recorded at our tenth Writers’ Bloc Workshop, hosted at the Abbotsford Convent between 15-19 October, 2012.

Since the first Writers’ Bloc in 1993, this iconic Mushroom event has become a main feature of the Mushroom Music Publishing calendar. The Writers’ Bloc brings together a wide scope of our roster, responsible for spawning an incredible catalogue of works (remember the hit song “Cry” by The Mavis’s?) Offshoots, the New Zealand Writers’ Bloc and the Country Writers’ Bloc, have also become established events in the Mushroom Publishing calendar.

Over the course of the week in 2012, 39 writers from both Australia and New Zealand, and representing a range of genres and writing styles, were grouped into pairs with the pressure cooked task of writing and demoing a song in a day. While most approached this with a heady mixture of trepidation and excitement, all involved rose to the challenge, seizing the opportunity to connect with their peers, create, share and adapt ideas, and distance themselves from their all too familiar comfort zones.

Amongst the lush, verdant surrounds of the Convent, temporary studios were set up in the grand Community Room, the ominous Bishop’s Parlour, Mother Superior’s Chamber (ironically the complex’s smallest space) and The Linen Room, geared with engineers ready to capture lightning in a bottle. The convent’s disciplinary aura, combined with our writers’ advanced understanding of makeshift recording, has produced our most focused and developed workshop material to date.
